Metallica’s “Blackened” Whiskey is Now Available (in the Jar-Oh… Ah!)

Back in March we reported that Metallica were working on a branded whiskey with distiller Dave Pickerell (ex-Maker’s Mark). That whiskey, called “Blackened” (after the band’s classic song, duh), will finally be available to the public later this week.

It’s unclear whether Pickerell followed through on his promise to build out a new distillery in which the whiskey would be created (or, if not, whether that might still happen in the future), but Metallica’s new whiskey is not without a gimmick: the whiskey is subjected to loud blasts of Metallica music during the aging process, which allegedly influences the flavor. Meyer Sound has engineered a proprietary subwoofer that amplifies the low-frequency sound waves necessary to get the juices moving, which Pickerell describes as “low hertz sound waves so intense that it actually enhances the molecular interaction and ultimately the finish of the whiskey.” Alright, if you say so!

The whiskey is a blend of bourbons, ryes and other whiskeys, meaning whiskey purists are likely to stay away from it… but that’s surely not the target audience here, and certainly doesn’t mean it’s bad. Blackened American Whiskey will be available at select retailers through the U.S. and for order online at Think Liquor or Spirited Gifts, although not all states allow delivery of spirits. No word on the price point yet. The whiskey will also be available in stores, restaurants, and bars surrounding a handful of the band’s U.S. tour dates this fall.
