You know the drill. All week, Music Feeds has been rounding up the strangest array of songs triple j have been blasting during their ‘Requestival‘ event, and Day 5 may have given us the creme of the crop of cooked.
Big call, we know, but we think it’s merited considering Sally & Erica blasted the Pokémon theme song before 7am.
They also gave us Eskimo Joe’s ‘Black Fingernails, Red Wine’, They Might Be Giants’ ‘Dr. Worm’ and, as the duo’s last hurrah to ‘Requestival’, they played Pitbull & Ke$ha’s ‘Timber’.
It was well and truly going down.
Lucy Smith took over at 9am, and immediately took us to Splendour. Specifically, she took us to the crowds of people hobbling out of the ampitheatre in joined sing-a-long with DJ Ötzi’s ‘Hey Baby’.
But her final ‘Requestival’ show was centred around the pop hits that shaped triple j‘s demographic. She played Kylie Minogue’s ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’, All Saints’ ‘Pure Shores’ and closed with Nelly Furtado’s ‘Maneater’.
Dave Woodhead didn’t come to play once midday hit, entering with the powerful double whammy of Eurythmics’ ‘Sweet Dreams’ and Eminem’s ‘The Real Slim Shady’.
He gave ‘Flame Trees’ a well deserved spin. He gave us S Club 7, N*SYNC and Shaggy all in one hour, suddenly sprouting frosted tips on heads across the country. He gave LMFAO’s ‘Party Rock Anthem’ a play, for better or for worse.
And he gave us this – the cornerstone of Australian pop culture.
Hobba and Hing signed on at 3pm, and gave Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’ its inaugural spin after that Hottest 100 controversy back in 2014.
They helped us WAKE UP! in the afternoon slump with ‘Chop Suey!’, they took us back to 2003 with Eve & Gwen Stefani’s ‘Let Me Blow Ya Mind’ and they threw us all in ridiculous wigs for Europe’s ‘The Final Countdown’.
Not to mention, they gave us the most epic orchestral moment on triple j since…Tuesday when they played Beethoven, with John Williams’ ‘Duel of the Fates’ from the Star Wars episode we don’t talk about.
If the final show of the week’s ‘Requestival’ needed to go out with a bang, then Bridget Hustwaite came armed and ready.
Straight out the gates with Natasha Bedingfield’s ‘Unwritten’, following it up shortly after with Gina Riley’s ‘The Joker’ aka The Kath & Kim theme song. Absolute scenes.
Hustwaite hyped up one artist by saying that he’s been “booked from island to island and slaying the Nook Charts.” Of course, she was referring to K.K. Slider from popular video game Animal Crossing New Horizons, with one of his many tracks ‘Bubblegum K.K.’
She gave us the Macarena, she gave us the original version of ‘Believe’ as opposed to DMA’s Like A Version, she gave us LeAnn Rimes’ ‘Can’t Fight The Moonlight’ and she gave Australia’s national anthem – The Veronicas’ ‘Untouched’ – a rightly deserved spin.
And, with perhaps the greatest goodbye to ‘Requestival’ we’d seen on Day 5, she closed the show with Mr. Burns’ ‘See My Vest’. ICONIC.
‘Requestival’ extends until Sunday evening. You can see our other recaps of the history making event here.
